Who are the North Star Independent Homeschoolers?
We are families of homeschoolers in Interior Alaska’s North Star Borough who homeschool our children without taking any government monies or oversight to do so. This is a great and legal option for all homeschooling families in Alaska!
As independent homeschoolers, we – Dads and Moms – assume complete responsibility for educating our children. This is unlike Alaska’s charter school programs (IDEA, Raven, etc.), in which this responsibility is shared between taxpayers, the charter system, its employees, and the parents.
What We Offer to Our Member Families
· Bi-weekly activities for our children.
· A welcome packet that includes two of our group brochures, Home School Legal Defense Association information, information on getting started with homeschooling, homeschool product catalogues, a membership form, and a free copy of the book So WHY Do You Homeschool? Answering Questions People Ask About Home Education by Mimi Davis (while supplies last).
· A mentorship program in which veteran homeschooling families (those who have homeschooled for five or more years) offer families new to homeschooling information on getting started, friendship, non-financial support, and encouragement.
· Stanford and Iowa achievement testing for parents who are interested.
· A monthly newsletter.
· The availability of state certified teachers (who independently homeschool their own children) to help homeschooling parents who need or would like their help.
· Second-hand and free educational books and items.
· Outreach opportunities in our community and state.
· Up-to-date information on legislation both in our state and nation that concerns homeschooling and families.
· Opportunities for our families to socialize with and support each other.
· A lending library.
· A teen group for our homeschooled teens.
· The opportunity for Interior Alaskan homeschoolers to stand together for our homeschool freedom.

There is no cost to join our group and all that we offer and share is 100% free.
We highly encourage your family to join the Home School Legal Defense Association (H.S.L.D.A.). This is a group of lawyers that for a set fee a year (just a little over $100.00), will answer your legal questions and defend your family if legal matters come up concerning your homeschooling. It is basically “homeschooling insurance”, but it is so much more than that. H.S.L.D.A. has payment plans in which you can pay as little as $8.00 a month for those who need it. Also, please commit to coming to as many meetings and activities as possible. We’ve got a lot in common and a lot of great things to share!
Please note that we are a Christian homeschool group. We are not here to evangelize or push any particular denomination on anyone, but are here for homeschool support.
