North Star Independent Homeschoolers™
Twice-a-month get-togethers for our families to enjoy interactivity and socialization time. We currently meet on the first and third Thursday of each month. We meet year-round.
Once-a-month presentation opportunities for interested children. This is a fun time for interested children (participation is not mandatory) to share information on something that they have learned about or have an interest in. Children have a chance to practice and learn: preparation & organization, presentation, public speaking, listening, audience participation, and social skills during this time.
A monthly newsletter via e-mail or postal mail (delivery method depends on group member preference).
The opportunity for both children and their parents to participate in a traditional (woodwinds, brass, percussion) band under the leadership of a professional musician! Each participant must provide his or her own instrument and purchase the text used in this band, but participation is free - our instructor does not charge for his time and instruction! Note: If your child is interested in participating in our band but does not or cannot get an instrument at this time, please be sure to let us know. We do have some extra instruments that can be used freely. We also have a very limited scholarship fund for band texts if someone is in need of a text to participate in our band.
A homeschool mentorship program in which new family (or somewhat new) to homeschooling is offered the opportunity to be "paired up" with a veteran homeschooling family (a family who has homeschooled over seven-years). The veteran family can help the newer family by answering questions, sharing information on record keeping, curriculum, schedules, transcripts, etc. and by just being available when needed.
A lending library.
Activities and special events throughout the year.
Timely information on Alaska and national homeschool legislation.
The opportunity for those interested to have an Alaska state certified teacher and or a professional counselor be of help with records and such if needed. Three Alaska state certified teachers and a professional counselor are members of our group, though they independently homeschool their own children and do not teach or work in public schools at this time. They are very kind to help our group members with needs that they can meet and agree to do so freely!
Standardized testing for those interested. The state certified teachers in our group gladly offer their services to provide testing to children whose parents want them to test. Actual tests must be bought by participating children's parents, however the actual testing, which must be done by a state-certified school teacher, is free; our wonderful teachers donate their time for testing!
Classes for member mommas.
A graduation ceremony and reception for group member graduates.
God willing, beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, co-op classes for group member children!
An annual group anniversary picnic.
Field trips.
An online Meetup group for members with an event calendar, message board, and more.
